Ah, yes, the ever present question in my mind as of late. I mean what did we DO before the internet and cell phones??? I use my phone entirely too much throughout the course of a day to stay in touch with friends and loved ones, check my email, and handle my business. In some ways, the convenience is incredible, the apps are awesome, but I have to wonder if the overwhelming wealth of technology makes us more isolated and therefore I feel it gives us a window to conduct ourselves in a more inauthentic manner than we should.

Songwriter friends of mine penned these lyrics that hit the nail on the head:

"There's too much information. There's too much isolation." - (www.myspace.com/carneytheband)

The first time I heard that song it felt like my thoughts were being pulled out of my head the way Dumbledore pulls his memories for the pensive in Harry Potter. It really got me thinking. We have so many ways to stay in touch! Cell phones, texting, Instant messenger, Ichat, Video Phones, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Blogs, Forums etc. We can call people from airplanes and cars, We have so much information at our fingertips! Wikipedia, Google, Youtube, Netflix, Itunes, Amazon, CNN, MSN, E!, MTV, etc etc etc It's really quite extravagant.

I have to wonder sometimes if we've overwhelmed ouselves. People feel this need to know all the answers because we have so much knowledge at our fingertips it's almost frightening. We connect digitally and stay informed 24/7 on what people are up to (I love Twitter as much as the next person.) But are we losing that real human connection?  Sometimes I feel that all of these mediums of communication give us too many excuses to procrastinate, disengage or be passive aggressive. People hook up, hire, break up and fire over email, texting and instant messaging. Men used to ride for days on end delivering love letters or soldiers' mail to mothers and now you're lucky if you can find a guy who'll actually CALL you to make or break plans. I have been guilty of it myself. Are we becoming lazy? Are we hiding? Why? I have to say it scares me.

Recently I've been doing theatre. First time in a few years. I can tell you there is nothing like that feeling of knowing that people are in the room with you connecting to what you're feeling up there. It's the same when I'm performing my music. It's electric. It's exhilerating. Something that can only be experienced between performers and audiences. I think that live performance may just be a form of pure true love and ultimate connection.

I've been making a concerted effort to myself to try and be much more authentic in my dealings. Experience has taught me that real true communication on a human to human level can teach you things about another person and yourself that you can never EVER get from an email or a conversation on AIM. I try to call my family every weekend just to catch up and see how they're all doing. I want to use technology as a means of bringing us closer together, not pulling us apart.

Step one for this in a music sense is what I am calling 'Project Music Love' I want to start a sort of revolution. Have you heard of www.freehugscampaign.org ? People organize these events and go around just being available for anyone who might need a hug. Who doesn't? I want to contribute in my own way. I want anyone who would want to sing with me or have something sung for them to write to me, or text me, or email me, or twitter me and join in on the fun. We'll sing whatever we can for whoever we can whenever we can and make the world a more pleasant place. As Terry says in Stage Door  "Put some heart back into it instead of tearing it out all the time."

...I know...I just did an entry. What IS the world coming to?

Home Home Home... [Feb. 10th, 2009|02:34 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , , , , ]

I just got back yesterday from SLC. It's always good to go. Only this time I inherited an 'awesome' sinus infection, so tonight my 14th time seeing Phantom of the Opera will be an interesting one cause it'll sound like it's being performed under water. Anyway, home was great of course. It was my grandma Ruby's 90th birthday so everyone on my dad's side of the family came to hang out at my Aunt Joan and Uncle Bruce's (and Kimmie's) house. I played Grandma the song I wrote for her. It's called "Ruby's Smile" (no, not like "Jamie Smiles" from just friends. Haha) and I said I was gonna make it through without choking up...but I didn't. Neither did she or any of my aunts though so I don't feel too incredibly bad about it. Anyway, now I'm at work and don't have tons of time to write, but this is me making an effort! :p

<3 to all.

RUBY'S SMILE
M.Trunnell 2009

I've got someone who is always with me
She brings out the sunshine, she fills what I'm missing
And I feel so lucky that I know what it means
Just to know her goodness and hear her melody

When there is dark, she is the light
When I am wrong she knows what's right

I've got her hands, her dancin' feet
And when I'm down it's Ruby's smile that helps me keep the beat
I've got her ear, and I can sing
But if I could wear Ruby's smile, I know I would have everything

She's my angel and she always saves me
From the trouble that I always get myself into
And I feel so lucky that I know what love means
Cause when Ruby smiles true love fills the room

When I am ill she makes me whole
Her harmony runs through my blood, sings to my soul

I've got her hands, her dancin' feet
And when I'm down it's Ruby's smile that helps me keep the beat
I've got her ear and I can sing
But if I could wear Ruby's smile, I know I would have everything

You are my love you are my light
I love you so I hope you know it's such a sight

When you smile.

I've got someone who is always with me
She brings out the sunshine, she fills what I'm missing.

So....American Idol Auditions... [Aug. 1st, 2008|12:59 pm]
It was VERY interesting.

About 16,000 people showed up to the Engery Solutions Arena and they way they pile you through actually amazes me. They had about 8 tables with two 'producers' set up behind the table. Each table had 25 golden tickets to give away. So out of 16000 only 200 got to go to the next round, 100 of which were what I call 'the crazies'. I figured out that it doesn't matter how well you sing, cause Sean and I both did really well, it matters WHEN in the day you go. I basically got the vibe of 'We really like your voices, but we still have 14000 more people to see and only a few golden tickets left, so not this time, but thanks for coming and waiting in line since 5 am!' hehe. It was definitely an experience to remember. I had fun and saw some crazy people! =0)

Catherine, I now understand what you mean. Lol.

Today's a little brighter [May. 29th, 2008|12:53 pm]
Ben Kweller is a mind reader:

"Penny On The Train Track"

I'm just a penny on the train track
Waitin' for my judgement day
Come on baby girl let me see those legs
Before I get flattened away

I wait
Yeah, I wait
For something good, for something great

Stoppin' in somebody's old home town
Gotta get that midnight meal
If you can't get behind your own life
Get behind the driving wheel

And go, just go
Find a place that you don't know

Ran into a friend just the other night
Got a badge, he's a local cop
Haven't seen that boy in over seven years
Since out of high school I dropped

I see, I see
All the things that I should be

Oh baby dance with me!

Even lucky man has a bad day
And pretty girl has a scar
After that train comes and takes me away
Pick up that guitar

And play, just play
Play that rock and roll for me

He's in the yard just washin' his car
Thinkin' 'bout his pretty wife
Makin' lemonade with the kitchen aid
Makin' him a perfect life

And it's grim, so dim
When you wish that you were just like him

I'm just a penny on the train track
Waitin' for my judgement day
Come on baby girl let me see those legs
Before I get flattened away

I wait, I wait
For something good, for something great

And I try, oh I try
I can't stop, I don't know why

When I'm nervous: Depends on the kind of nervous I am. I tend to shake inside but try to hold it in. Doesn't always work, but hey... mostly though I just end up doing something stupid to break the ice.

Last night I: Finished unpacking my apartment. Now comes the DECORATING PROCESS!!! Then I went and saw SeraFINE play at the Cat Club! Check her out on myspace. I played the pianie for her on 'Hangin On'. After that we went to Frankie and Johnnie's for Pizza of course!

PART 1: YOU
Were you a planned baby?: Mos'def. They had to try REAL hard to get me too.

Were you the first?: Yup.

PART 2: YOUR PERSONALITY
Do you have low self esteem?: I'm working on making the answer to that a 'NO' but yeah...I do.

Do you get depressed about things easily?: See above answer. Lately though, it's been a LOT LOT LOT better.

Are you happy right now?: I am...content. I know what I need to do to be happy and I'm not unhappy...yeah...content is a good word for right now.

PART 3: APPEARANCE
Are you comfortable with the way you look?: Not quite, but I'm learining.

Describe your hair: My hair is strange. It's wavy and fine, but there's TONS of it. I used to hate it but now I'm discovering I can pretty much do anything with it. I also enjoy the fact that it's long but not heavy.

PART 4: RANDOM
Ever been kicked out of a bar? Nope.

Ever been arrested?: Not yet...hahaha...

PART 5: THE OUTDOORS
Do you prefer indoors or outdoors?: I LOOOOOOVE being outside!

PART 6: FOOD
Are you a vegetarian? Nope. I like veggies though.

Anything you absolutely could eat forever?: This is a list that would take too long to make...

What is your favorite dessert?: Bananas Foster from La Caille. Nowhere else has it quite as right.

PART 7: RELATIONSHIPS AND LOVE
Do you want to get married?: Hmmm...if I find the right and I mean RIGHT person. Even then though...I'm pulling the Katherine Hepburn and we're living in separate apartments so I can tell him to go home sometimes.

1. Where is your cell phone?: In my purse.

2. Cheesecake? My mom's is the best.

3. Your dream last night?: I've been to sleepy to dream lately.
